The first thing you need to do is become affiliated with a travel agency. You’ll be booking holidays through them and they will pay you for the business you bring.

Most home-based travel agents are independent contractors who are affiliated with a number of different agencies, while some prefer to deal with only one travel agent in an exclusive relationship. Go with what works best for you, and what proves the most profitable.

Whatever your arrangement, remember that you are independent from any agency, so all your letterheads and business cards should feature your name and, if you have one, your company name.

The great thing about being your own boss is that you’ll find yourself taking on more than just the role of a travel agent – you’re the marketing agent, the accountant and the sales person all rolled into one! When the money starts rolling in, it’ll be you and only you enjoying all the credit.

So who will be the first customers? The best thing to do is to approach your friends and family. It’s a great way to practice before really getting out there and dealing with strangers.

Practice your sales pitches and telephone demeanour on the people you know.  Be mindful of the kinds of things that you yourself would want to ask a travel agent if you wanted to book a holiday. Support groups for home-based travel agents encourage beginners to tune into the needs of the potential customer.

Ask about what they’d like to do on their holidays, like whether or not they like golf or swimming or outdoor activities. Even if they don’t ask for it, suggest a resort offering the facilities where they can enjoy their hobbies.

Expounding the benefits of a package is also important. It’s those things that meet the needs of the customers to their satisfaction and convinces them that they’ve made the right decision.

Like all home-based businesses, success depends on the time and effort invested in making the business work. What you put in is what you get out – it’s a cliché, but it’s true.

Yes, overhead costs are much less and there’s a lot more space and time at your disposal, but remember that working from also requires a lot of discipline and strict time management. There’s potential to make big money as a home-based travel agent, so be productive and reap the rewards!
